Art at the Base of Tahquitz Canyon

Big Mike Art Gallery & Studio
The Lofts Art District · Palm Springs, California

A Gallery Rooted in Place

Set at the base of Tahquitz Canyon in South Palm Springs, Big Mike Art Gallery & Studio occupies a Richard Harrison–designed mid-century modern building within The Lofts Art District. The gallery sits beneath the San Jacinto Mountains, where desert light shifts across stone ridgelines, palms, and canyon walls throughout the day.

This environment is not backdrop — it is structure. The geological forms of Tahquitz Canyon, the architectural clarity of Palm Springs modernism, and the disciplined geometry of mid-century design converge in Big Mike’s Modern Sacred Geometry series. Inside 20-foot pitched ceilings, layered abstraction reflects both landscape and architecture: measured, luminous, and intentional.

Mid-Century Architecture in Palm Springs

The Lofts Art District is part of a complex designed by Richard Harrison, with neighboring buildings by Richard Harrison and Donald Wexler — architects whose work helped define Palm Springs mid-century modern architecture. Strong rooflines, deep overhangs, and structural clarity continue to influence the aesthetic of the gallery and the work presented within it.

Located in South Palm Springs with convenient Belardo Road access, the gallery sits within one of the city’s most dramatic architectural and natural corridors.

Tahquitz Canyon & Desert History

Tahquitz Canyon and the surrounding valley are the ancestral homeland of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, whose presence in this region spans thousands of years. The canyon remains a powerful geological and cultural landmark in Palm Springs — a landscape shaped by time, water, stone, and story.

That sense of permanence — of structure shaped over centuries — quietly informs the rhythm and order within the work exhibited here.

The Work

Big Mike’s paintings explore layered geometry, architectural rhythm, and desert luminosity. Influenced by mid-century modern design, Cubism, and Futurist movement, the compositions balance precision and motion — structure and atmosphere — reflecting both the built environment of Palm Springs and the enduring forms of the mountains beyond.
